Frequently Asked Questions:

|
 |
How
does sound masking work?
Imagine that you are in a darkened room and a child
is flicking a flashlight on and off. The light is noticeable
and distracting. Now imagine, the lights are on. The
same flashlight is being flicked on and off —
but without notice — it has been "masked."
This is a simple, if simplistic, analogy to sound masking.
Studies have found that more than 75% of all workers
in open-plan offices are distracted by out-of-office
conversations. Masking covers up or "masks"
human speech and helps mitigate the distraction of other
sounds, making an environment more comfortable, workers
more productive and creating speech privacy. |
 |
Why
use a Sonet Qt™?
Sonet Qt™ systems use Qt
Quiet technology™, a technology for sound masking
has proven effective in thousands of open office installations,
constructively adds background noise to dramatically
reduce remote speech intelligibility. Experiments show
that when office background noise increases, the clarity
of speech decreases and distractions are reduced. The
Sonet Qt™ system’s unique
technology achieves this interference with a minimal
increase in acoustic background level. |
 |
Why
isn't added background sound as intrusive as nearby
conversations?
Unlike speech, the sound produced by the Sonet
Qt™ has no "structure." It
is easy for the user to acclimate to it. As he/she does,
the added background sound from the Sonet Qt™
becomes just a part of the environment; one simply doesn't
notice it. |
 |
Is
The Sonet APS cost-effective?
Absolutely. The Sonet Qt™ can
be installed in individual workspaces requiring sound
masking. Therefore it is more cost effective for small
areas than in-ceiling systems; One Sonet Qt™
typically supports a space up to 100 square feet. The
Sonet Qt™ can also be used to
test potential problem areas. Traditional, in-ceiling
systems offer no such option. |
 |
My
company recently purchased a Sonet Qt™
and I would like to test it to see if it will help
me. How should I go about this?
Here is an easy, informal test:
- Jot
down which types of sound from outside your office
distract you the most.
- Use
the system for a trial period of about a week. You
will probably find that raising the volume over
the first few days is the easiest way to find the
most effective level for you. (Don't forget:
if the background changes, you can adjust The Sonet
Qt™ volume to suit your needs)
- At
the end of the trial period, consider whether the
distractions you initially noted have been reduced.
If so, you can safely conclude that The Sonet
Qt™ has been effective for you.

"When the surf was up, so was I. I'm a light sleeper
and just couldn't sleep with the irregular pattern of the
breaking waves outside my window. But the Sonet system from
Cambridge Sound Management covers up the sound of the waves
and I now sleep through the night."
